Assurance Supports the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind through Volunteer Efforts
Schaumburg, IL (June 19, 2013) - Assurance, an independent insurance brokerage with offices near Chicago and St. Louis, continued its commitment to giving on June 11, 2013, when several employees spent their work day volunteering at the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind. This is the seventh year in a row Assurance volunteers have assisted the Lighthouse.
For over 100 years, the Lighthouse has provided social service programs that open doors of opportunity for people who are blind or visually impaired. Some of the programs currently being offered include a clock manufacturing facility, nationally acclaimed school for children with multi-disabilities, legal clinic, veterans program and job counseling.
Assurance’s Lighthouse volunteer day is one of 15 similar days scheduled for 2013 where Assurance employees will donate their time to deserving nonprofit organizations. All volunteer days are organized by the company’s employee-driven charitable foundation, Assurance Caring Together (ACT).
At the Lighthouse, Assurance volunteers worked exclusively in the library which provides Braille and large print textbooks, as well as other learning materials to blind or visually impaired students across the state of Illinois. Each year, the books are returned to the Lighthouse from various schools for the summer and re-distributed once the school year commences. With Assurance’s assistance, thousands of books were unpacked and re-shelved, helping the Lighthouse continue its ability to provide educational resources to schools with visually impaired children.
“It felt very rewarding to help the Lighthouse serve the more than 4,000 students across the state who need Braille or large print classroom materials,” said Jonathon Trapp, Vice President at Assurance. He continued, “We are so pleased to have the opportunity to work with such a long-standing and model nonprofit agency.”
Under the motto “We Can Be Heroes”, Assurance employees have donated 12,600 labor hours in over an eight year span through volunteer opportunities organized by ACT. If you or your business would like to volunteer at the Lighthouse, please visit www.chicagolighthouse.org.
