Assurance Olympics: The Gold Standard in Wellness
When it comes to corporate wellness, most don’t picture employees dressed like Hungry Hippos or Leprechauns. They probably imagine a group workout class or free fruit in the employee lunchroom. Well, Assurance has lots of workout classes and plenty of free, healthy snacks to go around, but once a year we also throw costumes into the wellness mix.
What does having grown-ups wear silly costumes at work have to do with wellness?
Assurance Olympics is an annual event that allows employees to use their creativity while practicing wellness at the same time. Teams are formed through random selection and assigned a country to represent. Each team is headed by a captain who organizes event participation and team costume ideas. A wellness committee puts together an agenda of different activities in which teams earn points. The event is hosted during work hours for one hour, followed by a Medal Ceremony featuring healthy snacks.
Examples of this year’s Olympic events:
- Hoppy Employees = Happy Clients (jump roping)
- Dominate, Navigate and ABpreciate (sit-ups)
- For Those About to Rock Relay (relay race incorporating squats, running and push-ups)
- ‘A’ Team Cheer (team cheer)
It was a great mix of high and low intensity activities that catered to all skill levels. Each event had a participation capacity, so employees coordinated with team captains the event they most wanted to do.
And while Olympics are often considered exercise-oriented events, there are several other benefits that companies can reap from hosting one. A major highlight is creating teams with individuals from different departments. It gives employees the opportunity to get to know people they don’t work with on a day-to-day basis. Although these employees may communicate with each other regularly via phone or email, they may have never personally interacted. The diverse formation of each team creates camaraderie. They exchange ideas. They create amazing costumes. They work together.
It also provides leadership opportunities within the organization. Olympic team captains can organize who’s participating in which event, lead team cheers, organize outfits and manage game-day logistics. Olympic games can even incorporate internal themes, jargon or corporate culture. For instance, all of Assurance's activities referenced internal terminology.
It’s events like the Assurance Olympics that not only promote wellness, but promote a friendly culture where employees can have fun. If you’re interested in learning more about the implementation of an Olympics event at your company, please contact us.
