Why Physicals Are Important To The Employer
It’s that time of year again – when we all rush to get our kids to the doctor for annual physicals before school starts. You know, the physicals that are necessary for them to attend school and participate in sports. While we make it a priority for our kids, we seldom put the same emphasis on assuring we, as adults, obtain our physicals. And I’ve learned that from my own experience.
Although, I’m not proud to say it, it’d been a few years for me since I received a physical. “Why?” you ask – especially when this is what I preach to clients and employees every day? Well, it’s quite simple. I’m generally healthy. I exercise and eat right. What possibly could be wrong with me? And I’m sure that’s what most people think. But as the saying goes, you really should never judge a book by its cover.
Physicals are just as important for us as they are for our children. Let’s face it, our kids are counting on us to stick around for some time (or at least I tell myself that’s the case). The only way to make that possible is to find out what’s going on with our health. I’ve heard too many stories from friends; if they'd just taken their annual physical, if they’d just been committed to the gender specific exams, then maybe they would’ve caught it sooner.
Now I’m not here to utter a public service announcement, but trust me, it’s important. It’s important for you and it’s important for all of those who are close to you. And as an employer, it’s important to promote healthy behavior. Here’s why:
- Employers spend $18.00 per employee, per year on costs related to sickness and worker productivity
- Employee productivity is a top concern for most employers; multiple studies have shown physical exams boost productivity by almost 15%
- Early detection through a physical is critical to cutting costs for chronic disease
So, there you have it. It’s time to get physical and support all your employees to make sure they’re getting their wellness exams annually. It’ll pay off for everybody!
