Encouraging Wellness for Desk-Bound Employees
You’ve heard it before: “Sitting is the new smoking.” The modern, sedentary lifestyle of sitting at a desk for the majority of your work day has researchers concerned. The threat of diabetes, weight gain and heart disease is scary enough that some employees are even incorporating “treadmill desks” into their offices. While many would like to walk and work, purchasing treadmills for every employee may not be financially possible for every organization. We suggest some alternative options that are so easy to incorporate, you can start today.
Encourage your employees to:
- Hold Standing Meetings
At Assurance, our “Buzz” conference room houses a table that’s taller than average. We have chairs that support the table, but employees often forego a seat to stand. The table allows for comfortable note taking while on your feet.
- Set Walking Meetings
For meetings with few individuals, such as a one-to-one, invite your colleague to walk with you to grab coffee or get fresh air.
- Complete a 5k Challenge
Last year, we challenged all of our employees to complete a 5k race. For motivation, we offered a “Couch to 5k” training program and encouraged employees to train with their coworkers during their lunch break.
- Cut Back on Email
Instead of sending a quick question to a team member, walk over to their desk and ask them in-person.
- Set Alarms
Create time once or twice an hour to remind yourself to get up and move around. Something as simple as walking to the restroom, grabbing a glass of water or just taking a stroll is enough to get your metabolism going.
At Assurance, we’re experts at creating a healthy workplace culture. Contact us today, and our Employee Benefits team will ensure the health of your organization reaches its full potential.
