Five-Star Rating System
When Assurance’s Risk Management team was approached by a nursing home out of Southern Illinois, they had a challenge in front of them. The family-owned and operated facility, which has a notable reputation in the community, had an overall rating of 1 star in 2012 and the beginning of 2013 – that’s one out of five stars.
This rating is part of the Five-Star Rating System, created by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), allowing consumers to compare the quality of care and services in nursing homes. The ratings are based on health inspections, staffing and Quality Measures (QM). Needless to say, the Illinois-based facility wanted to improve upon its risk management techniques and ensure its employees fully understood the Five-Star rating process.
Enter: Assurance’s Risk Management team. In a matter of a year, Assurance was able to increase the overall rating by two stars! So how did they do it? First, Assurance’s team conducted a loss control/risk safety assessment that focused on high-risk resident care areas for their facility in August of 2012 and July 2013, where recommendations were also provided at each consultation.
In addition, education and training on risk management were shared to help reduce negative outcomes and mitigate risk. Provided training to all organization members was also in the works, where they were taught more on survey participation, Quality Measures, assessment practices and Five-Star performance guidelines.
Most recently, Assurance was recognized as the 2014 Associate Member of the Year by the Illinois Health Care Association (IHCA). Associate members provide long-term care centers with the necessary supplies and services that are necessary in offering residents with the appropriate care.
With Assurance’s assistance, the facility is looking to improve upon its rating even further. Its goal is to achieve a 4 or 5-star overall rating in 2015. We’re looking forward to a new year and progression!
