How Do You Make Millennials Happy?
Navigating a Multi-Generational Workforce
It seems like more and more I’m reading posts, hearing discussions and attending workshops surrounding the current workforce and generational gap. You hear a lot about “Millennials” and the pros or cons surrounding their place in the workforce. Now, let me be upfront. I myself am a Millennial. I consider myself to be on the older side of the Millennial spectrum, but nevertheless still a part of the generation. Millennials (born between 1980 and 2000) are the largest generation in the U.S. with close to 80 million, many of which are in the workforce.
Some of what you read about my generation isn’t too positive. Say what you want, but this generation has created and scaled some of the most successful and innovative companies of all time – Facebook, Pinterest, Snapchat, Dropcam, Dropbox, just to name a few.
Millennial or not, we can all say we’ve seen a drastic change over the past decade in the way companies work to recruit and retain their professionals. Companies today are faced with developing new engagement models to take into account the generational changes and differences that are occurring.
So what attracts Millennials, and what makes them happy? Well, here’s a start:
- Perks and Incentives– This isn’t just free Starbucks (no one is complaining either), but structured initiatives and benefit programs that include wellness, PTO and various incentives.
- Making an Impact– According to the Achieve 2015 Millennial Impact Report, 84% of Millennial employees made a charitable donation in 2014. Millennials seek work with a greater purpose, so look for ways to integrate community involvement and/or participation in a charitable donation.
- Mentorship– Millennials seek leadership and guidance; someone they can freely approach. They value personal, one-on-one feedback that allows for free, open discussion.
- Collaboration vs. Competitiveness– Millennials seek more of a “team player” approach vs. competition. A collaborative work environment tops the list.
- Work-Life Balance– Flexibility in the workplace is key. According to the Millennial Branding report, 45% of Millennials will choose workplace flexibility over pay.
Generational gaps do and will continue to exist, however, adjusting corporate culture to appeal to this group is being adopted by more and more companies and for good reason – it's a mutually-beneficial relationship for all.
