How to Position Your Social Service Organization
Ok, first, I must admit that I’m biased – the majority of my clients are social and human services organizations. I truly have a passion for them! I’ve visited hundreds of facilities in my career and have seen first-hand the wonderful impact these organizations are having on children and families. But unfortunately, there’s little understanding by the general public of what these organizations do for others and the very difficult challenges that they face.
If you manage or run a social service organization, youth residential facility, affordable housing or other not for profit, you should ask yourself, “how can we position ourselves in a way that illustrates how we maximize the health and well-being of the people we serve?” Share on social media, create a blog and welcome the media so they can shed positive light on how you enhance the well-being of so many lives. Creating a brand for your organization isn’t pushy; it’s simply informative and helps your organization stand out and succeed.
What constitutes success? I would call it a success when a child in a youth residential facility finds a loving foster family. I would call it a success when a child high-fives an executive director and says “thank you.” I would call it a success when that child is welcomed by permanent adopted parents. I would call it a success when a child can return to their biological parents. I would call it a success when a child learns to work and deal with adversity in an appropriate manner.
For those not for profits who aren’t social service organizations, the next time you have an opportunity to partner with these organizations, please do! You’ll be impressed by the services they perform, and saddened at the same time that these types of services are needed. These organizations need all of our help – monetarily and on a volunteer basis. And for all not for profits, remember to never lose sight of what’s important, and ensure others don’t either.
