Know It. Prevent It. Do It.
By now, we should all know wellness is important. At Assurance – it’s in our blood. We could name countless reasons why it’s important to us. The most important reason being that we see the major impact wellness has on our clients’ organizations. On a daily basis we work with our clients to build and promote wellness programs for their employees that help them minimize the risk and maximize health of their organization. But it’s also important because we live by these same standards with our own employees. We practice what we preach!
2016 is a big year for us at Assurance when it comes to our Eye of the Tiger wellness program. We’re making some major, exciting changes to our program. But before any wellness program can have an impact, it’s important to understand the philosophy. At Assurance, ours is pretty simple: Know it. Prevent it. Do it.
Know It: As with everything, you need a starting point. Every employee must understand their health status and the key numbers driving personal health and wellbeing. That’s the only way we can continue doing what works, or change what’s needed, to minimize risk and maximize health.
Prevent It: We can’t stop all health-related illnesses and accidents. But, we can make every effort to prevent the preventable. It’s amazing how we take the necessary steps to ensure our kids (and our cars) get their annual checkups, but we often fail to do the same ourselves. Annual checkups, along with gender and age-specific checkups, are a key component of a preventative maintenance program.
Do It: Once you know your numbers and consult with your physicians, it’s time to take ownership. Take care of yourself and live your life in a way that promotes a healthy lifestyle. Trust me, you’ll be happier for it and those around you will be too!
Why are we so passionate about promoting this wellness philosophy with our employees? We’re fully aware of the tremendous positive outcomes of people living healthier lifestyles. On the other hand, we also know everyone approaches wellness differently. If our new wellness program is going to be truly revolutionary and successful, we needed to take that into account. Everyone is different and more importantly, everybody is motivated differently. Your wellness approach might be the polar opposite of mine, and that’s okay, so long as it works for you and keeps you healthy.
So guess what? While we can’t force anyone to know it, prevent it and do it, we can incent and reward for it. With our new wellness program, we’re planning to financially incent all Assurance employees in new and exciting ways to make these choices. And we’re going to allow them to do it in a way that’s personal for them.
So remember, wellness programs are important, but sharing the philosophy around why it’s important to your organization is crucial.
