Know Your Numbers
It's no secret that wellness programs have many advantages - from decreased healthcare costs to improved employee health and engagement. But without biometric screenings as the foundation of your program, you won’t ever get the results you’re looking for.
Biometric screenings are blood draws done by a phlebotomist either through a venipuncture or finger prick. The blood sample is then used to run a whole panel of tests. This information is 100% private to each individual. Therefore, no employer will ever see an individual employee’s results. These results are then compared to the norm to give that individual information on how they compare in areas like cholesterol, diabetes and high blood pressure. There are many other health categories tested as well.
Advantages for the Employee
When it’s all said and done, the employee has an easy to understand work-up of their overall health picture and what each test means. The employee also sees where they might be in jeopardy of having a condition. The results can be shared with a doctor so when employees go in for an annual checkup they can have a more meaningful discussion and create a plan to treat anything that needs attention. The biometric screening can help alert an employee, who may not be going to the doctor regularly, to any unknown conditions before they become large claims.
Advantages for the Employer
The employer benefits by getting an aggregate report on how the entire group compares. This data can then be used to help shape the wellness program to target any concerning areas. By being able to see where the true problem areas are, the wellness program can provide more meaningful information and support to help the greatest amount of employees. By having at least 80% of the total population on the health plan participate in a biometric screening, you’ll get a more accurate view into where some of the future employee medical claims may come from, and more importantly, be able to help stop them from becoming large claims in the future. Also, by doing annual biometric screenings, not only can the employee chart their own personal results over time, but the employer can see how the wellness initiatives have affected their target areas and if the problem areas are improving.
Once empowered with biometric screening data, an employer doesn’t have to sit back and wait for bad claims to happen. Instead, they can take measures to minimize those larger lifestyle-type claims, and in doing so, keep medical costs lower.
