Lowering the Bar in 2016
Forget raising the bar, my 2016 New Year’s resolution is to lower the bar. In fact, I solemnly vow to scale down my performance in the upcoming year. Furthermore, I plan to encourage people around me to dial it back as well.
You see, 2016 is the year I take Sheryl Sandberg’s quote “done is better than perfect” to heart. I’m kicking my former addiction to “flawless execution” solidly to the curb. This is not my normal style, nor my natural inclination. But we’ve got a lot of important progress to make in many facets of our business at Assurance. And, like all companies, we have finite resources to do so.
If I can hold true to my new outlook and convince others around me to do the same, then our progress at Assurance may be the boldest and most productive we’ve ever experienced. This next year we’re going to stop project scope creep, find all kinds of smart shortcuts and repeat “that’s good enough” over and over. In the end, we’re going to get all kinds of great work done and create outstanding results.
Is done truly better than perfect? I sure hope so. I can’t wait to get started.
