Mentors Change the Game
Finding a mentor was one of the best things I’ve done for my professional development. When I began my search for a mentor, it was important to me to find someone who had strengths in the areas I saw as opportunities for myself. I also knew for it to work, my mentor needed to be someone I trusted, someone whose opinion I valued and someone with similar ways of thinking to me. Everyone picks a mentor for different reasons, and that’s okay.
Here are the three reasons I think everyone should have a mentor:
- The right mentor can see where you need to improve, where you often can't.
George Lucas once noted, "They (mentors) will always be brutally honest with you and tell you exactly how it is rather than downplay any weaknesses they see in you." The best part is, because your mentor is someone you trust, you’re open to feedback that’ll make you better and not leave you doubting your abilities.
- Mentors help you keep going when things get hard.
Mentors provide you with feedback (sometimes tough!), but also sprinkle in regular encouragement. They won't let you stop or give up, and they’re committed to providing you with the encouragement that gives you the confidence to take on anything that’s thrown your way.
- Mentors are great sounding boards.
Having someone to bounce ideas, issues, problems, approaches and strategies off of is an awesome thing. A mentor isn’t someone who will give you the answers or do it for you; but having the ability to share your approach to a project before rolling it out can make the outcome even more powerful.
“Mentoring is a brain to pick, an ear to listen and a push in the right direction.” – John C. Crosby
