OSHA 300 Recordkeeping Requirements
As of January 2015, OSHA implemented new requirements for recording on-the-job injuries and illnesses. Compliance with these requirements help employers avoid OSHA penalties and generate information that can be used in the pursuit of an injury-free waste and recycling facility.
OSHA has three primary recordkeeping requirements for injuries:
- OSHA 300 Log
- OSHA 301 Form (accident report)
- OSHA 300A Form (annual summary of losses)
OSHA 300 Log
The OSHA 300 Log is a required listing of injuries and illnesses that occur in the workplace and must be maintained on an ongoing basis. The log can be a useful tool to trend accidents in the workplace. Employers are required to document any recordable injury or illness within seven calendar days of occurrence on the 300 log. A host employer is also required to list any injuries or illnesses of an outside employee such, as a temporary staff worker. A “recordable” injury is one that requires more than a simple first aid treatment.
OSHA 301 Form
The 301 incident form is to be used as an accident investigation form. This or an equivalent form must be completed to document an investigation of any workplace injury or illness. The goal of this step is to identify the cause of injuries, which will help in the development of future prevention strategies and procedures.
OSHA 300A Form
The OSHA 300A Form must be posted February-April of each year providing summary information about the previous year’s losses. This must be posted so all employees can view this document.
All OSHA 300 Logs and related documents must be retained for five years. This documentation is one of the first items requested during an OSHA inspection.
