Professional Athletes and Your Employees Have a Lot in Common
So you don’t need to pay your employees the same salaries as a NFL quarterback or NBA point guard, but getting them healthy will pay off when you see the impact it has on your Workers’ Compensation costs. A recent Business Insurance article explores the similarities between professional athletes.
The link between wellness and Workers’ Compensation is something our CEO, Tony Chimino, has always felt passionately about. As an organization that services both Business Insurance and Employee Benefits clients, we understand that the disciplines are actually weaved together tightly.
Having employees that’re healthy and know how to work safely can obviously largely impact the cost of claims. No matter what their job entails. This rule applies to everyone at your organization from maintenance managers to receptionists. Whether it’s strengthening one’s back in order to properly lift material, or a cardio class to improve circulation in sedentary employees, getting employees in shape is sure to boost productive and increase safety.
“Most companies that view safety as a key component to their culture incorporate wellness activities into their safety training," says Chimino. “They view wellness as the component that specifically targets comorbidity issues. Great companies no longer think of comorbidity costs as solely group health-related concerns. Wellness programs are all now a part of great safety cultures,” he continued.
If you were managing a professional athlete, you’d be concerned with their health first and foremost. What’re they eating? How often do they work out? Do they smoke? Taking this same approach with your real estate employees not only shows them that they’re of value to you, but you’ll see the results when fewer employees are being injured on the job.
