There are over 300,000 churches in the United States with an average attendance of fewer than 100 people. More than 90% of churches don’t have more than 500 attendees. That being said, most of those churches only have a few employees. In most cases, the employees are pastors and maybe a few people to help with the church’s administrative needs.
Most churches utilize the service of outside vendors. This could be anything from help with IT needs, repairs to the church property, security services or transportation to offsite functions. When any church uses an outside service provider there is an exposure to risk. This is where risk transfer comes into place.
Risk transfer is the shifting of risk from your organization to another. What does this mean for churches? Churches use service providers for any myriad of reasons. What happens if a service provider is in your church doing their task and gets hurt in the process? What happens if their work causes damage to your property? Who and what is covering your church from loss?
Every church should have a system of risk transfer in place. A simple way to look at it is with this rule: anyone coming in and out of your church for things unrelated to church functions should be accepting the risk. This would be service providers and people or organizations renting your space. It’s important to ensure that any risk that can be transferred away from the church is done so. Systems can be implemented to make sure this takes place, and takes place effectively.
