Companies that provide wellness initiatives find employees are happier and healthier. Employees are sick less, which results in fewer sick days and increased productivity. The frequency of claims such as strains or sprains are reduced as well as soft tissue injuries.
Healthier eating habits also translate into a more productive employee resulting in less time away from the job. Improved diet also reduces illnesses such as diabetes, high blood pressure and heart disease.
Rolling out a company-wide wellness program will take time and effort from management. Here are some ideas your company can implement for all employees, including field-employees (and yes, were going to recommend salad and stretching!)
Get Your Stretch On Most construction workers were or are athletes. Encourage employees to take a few minutes in the morning and after breaks to think about what type of work they will do that day and to prepare their body. They likely stretch before a ball game, run or workout, so why not before construction work?
Salad, Anyone? Many companies use food in their safety incentive program. Rather than serving burgers or pizza, substitute with healthier food options. In your upfront costs this may be a few dollars more, but, your employees will feel less lethargic and will be more productive in the afternoon. A win-win for everyone.
Work Out. Get Paid. Or something similar. This may include, discount gym memberships or rewards for participating in wellness activities outside of work. The more active your employees, the healthier and more productive they will be.
Talk About It! Provide information on wellness and nutrition through paycheck stuffers and during weekly toolbox talks. Also, send this information home. Getting the employees family involved and providing resources for healthy living will show your dedication to your employees well being.
Provide Screenings and Physicals Encourage employees to get regular health screenings and physicals. Dont forget to provide information and resources for drug and alcohol abuse and tobacco free living.
Being well takes work and most of us need a little push and some guidance. Rolling out wellness initiatives will directly reduce your companys Workers Compensation expenses. But, the best benefit will be your healthy, happier employees!
