The Rental Church
In the church today, it’s very common to rent the space where services are held. Some might think this is only the case for new churches, but in reality this is a common practice among well-established churches both large and small. Many churches will rent out school gymnasiums or auditoriums. Others rent out movie theaters. Some even rent space from other churches. This practice helps the church reach their members without the expense of buying real estate.
When a church rents a location there are certain things outside their control. Because of this, what should these churches consider when renting? Here are a few ideas:
Liability – The first thing every church will have to deal with is the insurance requirements from the organization renting them the space. Make sure the coverage your church has in place meets the requirements of the organization leasing the space. The liability the leasing organization carries won’t cover the operations of the church while they’re in the space.
Church property – While the renting church doesn’t need property coverage for the building, they do need property coverage for their possessions. This includes things like sound equipment, musical instruments, projector, lightings, etc.
Building security – In many cases, the organization renting to the church will allow them to store their personal property on-site. The church needs to know what kind of security measures the leasing organization has to help protect their property when the church isn’t present. Do they provide locked storage space? Who beside the church has access to the space?
Evacuation routes – When the church rents space, they typically only use a small portion of the property. The church needs to know the evacuation routes in the event of an emergency. Churches should walk the space with the employees and volunteers to help ensure that in the event of an emergency, the members are quickly and safely directed out.
