You Betta' Recognize!
Recognition inspires and Engages Employees
Imagine if your hard work consistently went unnoticed and your efforts weren’t appreciated by your employer. Would you feel motivated to continue giving it your all? Probably not.
Everyone wants to feel valued in the workplace. Individuals who feel valued are noticeably more engaged, contribute more frequently and produce better work. For this reason, it’s wise for companies to practice consistent and effective employee recognition. For employee recognition to be effective, it must be timely, clear and authentic.
Social media is rewiring all of us to crave instantaneous recognition. The number of “likes”, “views” and “shares” we receive and how quickly we receive them has become a source of obsession for many. This desire for immediate feedback has permeated into the workplace. We ought not to let the momentum of an achievement die by giving a delayed “thank you” or “high-five”. Be sure to provide in the moment or timely recognition.
When recognizing an employee for a job well done, be specific and descriptive. Has their accomplishment supported a team goal or your company’s vision? Tie their work back to a larger goal so they feel the impact of their efforts. When an employee has an acute awareness of how their individual contributions play into the bigger picture, they’re more engaged and passionate about their work.
Everyone has their own unique strengths and skillsets. By taking time to get to know people individually, you’ll be able to customize recognition with authenticity and sincerity. Recognition without authenticity is virtually meaningless to an employee – it isn’t viewed as genuine and doesn’t validate their contributions. For recognition to bear a positive effect, it must be authentic.
