You've Got Voicemail
Over the past three years, I’ve adopted a personal routine I believe has created some good feelings at my company and for me personally. I’ve been trying to call or leave a voicemail message for every employee on their birthday and anniversary date at Assurance. I have approximately 350 employees, so this is about 700 calls per year. More often than not, it breaks down to 2-3 calls per day. From these calls, I’ve received great feedback. I suppose everyone likes being recognized on their birthday – sans any mention of age. If you and your executive team start this practice, I believe you’ll receive the same great reception I have. Here’s how it works for me:
- My human resources department sends me a list each week of the birthdays and employment anniversaries for the week.
- I keep the list in front of me at my desk and cross off the names as I make the call or leave a message.
- For a variety of reasons, some days I do miss so I may be leaving a belated message.
- Prior to leaving the message, I often look up the employee on our intranet. We keep a short bio of each employee on their intranet profile. This allows me to make sure I know the person correctly.
I’m hopeful I can continue this practice far into the future. I believe once we reach 500 employees, I’ll need to enlist some help from the rest of my executive team. Although this is a very simple item, it does take commitment since it’s a weekly and daily event. This is one additional way to keep your employees engaged and appreciated at your company.
