Schaumburg, IL (June 19, 2012) - On June 12, a handful of Assurance employees volunteered their time to unpack, sort and shelve books at the Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind. For over 100 years, the Lighthouse has been a national trendsetter in providing social service programs that open doors of opportunity for people who are blind or visually impaired. Some of the programs currently being offered include a clock manufacturing facility, nationally acclaimed school for children with multi-disabilities, legal clinic, veterans program and job counseling.

Seven Assurance employees worked exclusively in the library portion of the Lighthouse, which provides blind or visually impaired students with Braille and large print textbooks, as well as other learning materials. The books are returned to the Lighthouse from various schools across the state of Illinois for the summer and then re-shipped out once the school year commences. With the help of Assurance, thousands of books were unpacked and re-shelved, allowing for the Lighthouse to continue providing educational resources to schools with visually impaired children.

"Helping the Lighthouse to continue serving the more than 4,000 students across the state who need Braille or large print classroom materials felt very rewarding,” said Jon Trapp, Vice President at Assurance. He continued, "We're so pleased to have the opportunity to work with such a long-standing and model nonprofit agency."

The event was part of a series of volunteer opportunities organized by Assurance Caring Together (ACT) committee. ACT is an employee-driven charity initiative that provides monetary support to a variety of charities along with a paid day to volunteer at a charitable event organized by the committee.
