Schaumburg, IL (July 1, 2013) - Assurance, an independent insurance brokerage with offices near Chicago and St. Louis, continued its commitment to giving on June 20, 2013, when several employees spent their work day volunteering with the Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA). This is the third year Assurance volunteers have assisted the organization.
Since 1976, WDSRA has been providing fun, recreational opportunities to more than 4,500 individuals with disabilities. The association is a cooperative extension of nine park districts including Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Naperville, Roselle, Warrenville, West Chicago, Wheaton, and Winfield.
The volunteer opportunity is one of 15 similar events scheduled for 2013 where Assurance employees will donate their time to deserving nonprofit organizations. All volunteer days are organized by the company's employee-driven charitable foundation, Assurance Caring Together (ACT).
Assurance volunteers spent the day at the Naperville, Illinois River Walk with 20 members of WDSRA's Rec & Roll program. Each volunteer was paired with a buddy from either the Naperville or Carol Stream WDSRA location. To promote social interaction and leisure independence, groups of four, including two Assurance employees and two WDRSA members, went on paddleboats around a secluded lake area. Groups were then divided up to play kickball and take a walk. The day also included a group picnic and running through sprinklers.
"I really enjoyed spending time with my buddy and the other Rec & Rollers,” said Victoria Perna, Account Manager at Assurance. "It was great to see how happy they were to have us there engaging in fun, outdoor activities with them!”
Under the motto "We Can Be Heroes”, Assurance employees have donated 12,600 labor hours in over an eight year span through volunteer opportunities organized by ACT. If you or your business would like to volunteer at WDSRA, please visit www.wdsra.com.
