Schaumburg, IL (August 8, 2012) - On Thursday, July 26, employees from Assurance's St. Louis office spent a successful day volunteering at the city's local food bank. Dedicated to feeding those in need for over 35 years, the St. Louis Foodbank is the Bi-State region's largest non-profit 501(c)(3) food distribution center.
Volunteers from Assurance worked in overdrive to sort and package as many cases of food as possible for the local community. On average, 300 cases of food are packed per shift, but Assurance volunteers managed to pack an astounding 690 cases during the morning shift and 480 during the afternoon shift. This equated to a total of 1,170 cases of food, which provides 31,519 meals for the hungry.
"It was really one of the most rewarding days I have spent, as the St. Louis Foodbank is very organized and can help feed so many people in the surrounding communities,” said Karen Baustian, Account Coordinator at Assurance. She continued, "Each time I volunteer at an ACT event, I walk away with a fresh perspective on life and new respect for what a person on the receiving end is going through.”
Under the motto "We Can Be Heroes,” Assurance employees have donated over 10,500 labor hours in a seven year span through volunteer opportunities organized by the company's Assurance Caring Together (ACT) committee. The St. Louis Foodbank is one of over 15 ACT events that Assurance employees have the opportunity to participate in each year.
