Schaumburg, IL (July 29, 2013) - Assurance, an independent insurance brokerage with offices near Chicago and St. Louis, continued its commitment to giving on July 18, 2013, when a number of employees spent their work day volunteering with St. Louis Area Foodbank. This is the second year Assurance volunteers from the St. Louis office have assisted the organization.
St. Louis Area Foodbank was started in 1975 to feed community members, as well as educate the public on the nature of hunger and solutions to this growing problem. With one in eight people in the bi-state region in need of food assistance, St. Louis Area Foodbank has become the area's largest nonprofit 501(c)(3) food distribution center. In 2011 alone, more than 25 million pounds of food was distributed, making up 97 percent of the Foodbank's resources.
The volunteer day is one of 15 similar days scheduled for 2013 where Assurance employees will donate their time to deserving nonprofit organizations. All volunteer days are organized by the company's employee-driven charitable foundation, Assurance Caring Together (ACT).
At the event, Assurance employees played an integral role in packing and preparing boxes of processed foods for local shelters. The group packed over 450 cases and 14,850 pounds of food in the morning and another 390 cases with 10,406 pounds of food in the afternoon. By days end, Assurance volunteers prepared 840 boxes and 25,256 pounds of food to help the nearly 57,100 people who rely on the St. Louis Area Foodbank each week.
"I walked away with a new respect for those on the receiving end, and came to realize how much people count on their local food distribution centers for survival,” said Karen Baustian, Account Manager at Assurance. "The moment I left, I couldn't wait to come back and make a difference again.”
Under the motto "We Can Be Heroes”, Assurance employees have donated over 12,600 labor hours in a nine year span through volunteer opportunities organized by ACT. If you or your business would like to volunteer with St. Louis Area Foodbank, please visit www.stlfoodbank.org.
