Schaumburg, IL (November 8, 2012) - On October 30, Assurance Caring Together (ACT), an employee-driven committee whereby philanthropic events are planned and executed, officially wrapped its 2012 volunteer program by visiting Northern Illinois Food Bank (NIFB) in Geneva, Illinois. The NIFB aims to acquire and distribute food to pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other 501(c)(3) hunger reduction sites in the surrounding communities. They also offer agencies educational opportunities to become more effective at fighting hunger.

With the holidays approaching and over 61,000 people needing meal assistance each week in Northern Illinois, the NIFB is busier than ever in its mission. ACT volunteers lent a helping hand as they spent the day at the food bank. Volunteers worked in the bulk repack room sealing and packaging food for distribution. They also spent time packing holiday food boxes and backpacks. By the end of the day, over 4,000 pounds of granola was separated. The team produced 157 holiday boxes and packed an impressive 1142 backpacks, amounting to 15,000 lbs. of food.

"The facility is so well run, and I love how they total up everything we accomplished during the day, so you feel a part of this large effort to eliminate hunger,” said Nazira Collins, Project Coordinator at Assurance. Benefits Compliance Specialist Mark Lam added that, "It was a great and rewarding experience that I would do again in a heartbeat!”

Under the motto "We Can Be Heroes,” Assurance employees have donated over 10,500 labor hours in a seven year span through volunteer opportunities organized by ACT. The Northern Illinois Food Bank is one of over 15 events scheduled for this year. For more information on fighting hunger or volunteer opportunities, visit www.solvehungertoday.org.
