Who: Assurance staff spent their Wednesday volunteering at Open Books. Open Books is a nonprofit social venture that provides literacy experiences for thousands of children each year through inspiring programs and creative capitalization of books. In addition to their literacy programs they sell books in their used book store to grant schools free access to their programs and used books.
What: Assurance volunteers spent the first half of the day as writing coaches to 60 third and fourth graders who came to Open Books for a field trip. They worked in groups of five students to coach a lesson on poetry and slam poetry. After the lesson, Assurance volunteers cheered on the kids as they performed in front of the class. During the second half of the day, the volunteers edited and typed the poems that will be compiled and printed in a book for every student in the class to take home.
