Who: Assurance employees spent a paid day off from work volunteering with 300 athletes from Special Olympics Chicago. Special Olympics Chicago is the largest region in the state of Illinois and surpasses 26 other states in program size. The nonprofit is the world’s largest program for sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, inspiring greatness in more than 5 million athletes in 170 countries worldwide.

What: Assurance employees volunteered at the Young Athletes Culminating event, a program created for children ages 2-7 with intellectual disabilities and their peers. At the event, there were 10 different stations that practiced foundational skills for all ages. Each station helps the athletes develop fundamental motor tracking and eye-hand coordination. The stations included: 

  • Walking & running
  • Balancing & jumping
  • Trapping & catching
  • Throwing
  • Striking
  • Kicking
  • Maneuvering obstacle courses
  • Cheering on winners during the awards ceremony

Why: The volunteer opportunity is one of 21 similar events scheduled for 2019 where Assurance employees donate their time to deserving nonprofit organizations. All volunteer days are organized by the company’s employee-driven charitable foundation, Assurance Caring Together (ACT). Assurance employees have donated over 24,000 labor hours in the last 14 years through ACT.
