Schaumburg, Ill. (June 28, 2017) – Liz Smith, president at Assurance, has been selected as one of Employee Benefit Adviser’s 2017 Most Influential Women in Benefit Advising. The women on this list were honored for standing out in a male-dominated profession, finding substantial savings for employer clients and strengthening their organization’s bottom line.
Liz carries the title of president and is also the youngest member of the company’s Board of Directors. She oversees a division of more than 115 employee benefits professionals, while also focusing on initiatives that impact Assurance as a whole.
She has many accomplishments during her career at Assurance. Just last year she played a prominent part in saving our clients over $12 million through self-funded programs, a consumerism strategy she heavily promoted. As part of that strategy, Liz worked to combine the efforts of Assurance’s safety, compliance and wellness teams by putting them into one risk department focused on helping clients minimize risk and maximize health. This holistic approach drives down insurance costs and improves productivity, absenteeism and company morale. Liz also championed Assurance’s own consumer-driven health and wellness plan. As a result, Assurance has stayed well-below trend and has 100 percent enrollment in Heath Savings Accounts (HSAs).
To put the icing on the cake, Assurance has recently announced its expansion into the Mid-Atlantic region. Liz played an integral role in the hiring and onboarding of Scott Lockman, who will lead the upcoming Mid-Atlantic office, as well as the strategy behind the growth and development of the expansion.
Through determination and hard work, Liz has certainly made a name for herself. Just ask client and former association partner Alan Becker who is an attorney for Litchfield Cavo, LLP. He stated: “I was impressed from the start with Liz’s professional presentations and cogent responses to questions. Our group, which disbanded a few years ago, was all men, but Liz had no trouble fitting in – and without making an awkward effort to be ‘one of the boys.’”
Liz serves on the Blue Cross Blue Shield Producer Advisory Council. She’s also a member of the leadership team for the Council of Employee Benefits Executives (CEBE) which is a standing committee of the Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers (CIAB). In addition, Liz is an active member of the American Heart Association Go Red for Women Executive Leadership Team, as well as the Northwestern University NClub and Northwestern University Volleyball Board.
