BEAR Construction Prevents Significant OSHA Penalties Through Focus on Safety
Schaumburg, Ill. (October 31, 2018) – Assurance is pleased to recognize BEAR Construction as a Minimizing Risk, Maximizing Health (MRMH) Award recipient. BEAR Construction is a Chicagoland leader in general contracting and construction management.
The MRMH Award is open to all Assurance clients that work alongside the Top 50 U.S. insurance brokerage to achieve quantifiable results in minimizing workplace risk and maximizing the health and wellbeing of employees. Clients must meet certain criteria to qualify, including a large quantifiable reduction or improvement in a variety of key areas.
In 2016, BEAR Construction became the general contractor for Chicago’s Old Post Office, a histrorical landmark in the city that spans over Congress Parkway. It had been vacant for years and after a recent sale, a redevelopment plan was quickly implemented.
With over 45 subcontractors and numerous building code deficiencies, BEAR Construction knew that safety would be a major challenge. Before work began, BEAR turned to their business partner, Assurance, to help formalize a three-step plan to ensure safety during all phases of the project:
- Site-specific safety plan requirements from subcontractors
- Mandatory onsite training and orientation
- Weekly site audits conducted by Assurance safety advocates to identify potential OSHA penalties and ensure work is being performed safely
BEAR achieved outstanding safety results for this project to date, including: site planning plans which prevented $161,100 in potential OSHA penalties, training that avoided potential penalties in excess of $990,00 and site audits preventing more than $2M in potential OSHA penalties.
“This was a very unique project for BEAR Construction and for the construction industry in general. Safety as a concept sounds great, but Assurance on this job put together a report for us that actually quantified in real dollars what savings we’ve achieved through our safety program – $2M in potential penalties avoided through safety audits and almost $1M in other site fines,” explained Scott Kurinsky, Executive Vice President at BEAR Construction.
“Congratulations BEAR! It’s because of their top-down commitment to safety and investment in outside resources that this amazing project has been such a success,” said Troy Stanton, Senior Vice President at Assurance.
Assurance recognized BEAR Construction’s achievements at a MRMH Award presentation on Thursday, October 4 at Chicago’s Old Post Office.
