Schaumburg, Ill. (Sept. 26, 2017) — When 17-year old Elk Grove Village resident Adrian was diagnosed with Leukemia earlier this year, it turned his world upside down. An avid hockey lover – playing, watching and collecting memorabilia – his diagnosis thrust him into constant doctors’ appointments and hospital visits and away from watching his favorite team and playing pick-up hockey games with his friends.

Through Make-A-Wish® Illinois, Adrian wished to visit The Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, Canada. After hearing Adrian’s story, Assurance employees, friends and family wanted to raise enough money to help grant wishes to children like him.

Assurance, a Top 50 U.S. insurance brokerage, hosted its annual We Can Be Heroes 5K Walk/Run, which was transformed into a Wish Party on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Busse Woods. The independent insurance agency and close to 200 participants– dressed in superhero costumes – raised $9,814 to support Make-A-Wish Illinois in granting life-changing wishes for area children with critical illnesses.

“The objective of the annual 5K is to not only encourage health and wellness among our employees and their friends and family, but to give back,” said Steven Handmaker, CMO of Assurance. “Make-A-Wish is an Assurance Caring Together (ACT) partner, and we’re really happy to work with them to cast a ray of light in what can be a dark time for children.”

The mission of Make-A-Wish is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Every year, nearly 1,200 children in Illinois are newly diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition. Make-A-Wish offers the opportunity for a joyous, life-changing experience.
