Schaumburg, IL (July 11, 2014) - Assurance, an independent insurance brokerage with offices near Chicago and St. Louis, continued its commitment to giving on June 17, 2014, when several employees spent their work day volunteering with Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind. This is the eighth year in a row Assurance volunteers have assisted the organization.

For over 100 years, the Lighthouse has provided social service programs that open doors of opportunity for people who are blind or visually impaired. Some of the programs currently being offered include a clock manufacturing facility, nationally acclaimed school for children with multi-disabilities, legal clinic, veterans program and job counseling.

The volunteer opportunity is one of 18 similar events scheduled for 2014, where Assurance employees will donate their time to deserving nonprofit organizations. All volunteer days are organized by the company’s employee-driven charitable foundation, Assurance Caring Together (ACT).

At the Lighthouse, Assurance volunteers worked exclusively in the library which provides Braille and large print textbooks, as well as other learning materials to blind or visually impaired students across the state of Illinois. Each year, the books are returned to the Lighthouse from various schools for the summer and re-distributed once the school year commences. The Lighthouse just received an enormous shipment of large print/braille books back. Assurance volunteers unpacked all the boxes, broke them down and put the books on a cart to be sorted. At the end of the day, 87 carts of books were filled.

“It was great to tour the facilities with the director and his service dog and learn about all the wonderful services the Lighthouse provides to visually impaired individuals,” said Alexis Awe, Senior Client Service Representative at Assurance. She continued, “The organization was very inviting and repeatedly thanked us for all the boxes we unpacked.”

Under the motto “We Can Be Heroes”, Assurance employees have donated over 14,500 labor hours in a nine year span through volunteer opportunities organized by ACT. If you or your business would like to volunteer with Chicago Lighthouse for the Blind, please visit www.chicagolighthouse.org.
