Schaumburg, IL (July 14, 2014) - Assurance, an independent insurance brokerage with offices near Chicago and St. Louis, continued its commitment to giving on June 24, 2014, when several employees spent their work day volunteering with Western DuPage Special Recreation Association (WDSRA). This is the fourth year Assurance volunteers have assisted the organization.

Since 1976, WDSRA has been providing fun, recreational opportunities to more than 4,500 individuals with disabilities. The association is a cooperative extension of nine park districts including Bloomingdale, Carol Stream, Glen Ellyn, Naperville, Roselle, Warrenville, West Chicago, Wheaton, and Winfield.

The volunteer opportunity is one of 18 similar events scheduled for 2014, where Assurance employees will donate their time to deserving nonprofit organizations. All volunteer days are organized by the company’s employee-driven charitable foundation, Assurance Caring Together (ACT).

At the event, over 20 Assurance volunteers were paired with a WDSRA Rec & Roll buddy for a “Camp Out”. The day started with camp songs around the fire pit and then went into small rotations for various camp activities. The rotations included a photo booth, trail mix bar, nature craft and building a bird feeder. The group grilled out for lunch and finished the day by playing JINGO and singing and dancing.

“I had a great time and liked that that we each had our own buddy, but also got to participate in smaller groups to interact with other Rec & Rollers,” said Nisha Iype, Human Resources Specialist at Assurance. Sandy Berg, Account Coordinator, added, “I loved seeing the smile on everyone’s face and hearing from my buddy Tom what a wonderful time he had with us.”

Under the motto “We Can Be Heroes”, Assurance employees have donated over 14,500 labor hours in a nine year span through volunteer opportunities organized by ACT. If you or your business would like to volunteer with WDSRA, please visit www.wdsra.com.
