Schaumburg, Ill. (October 15, 2015) – Liz Smith, President at Assurance, has been selected as one of Business Insurance’s 40 Under 40 winners. Celebrating its third year, Business Insurance’s 40 Under 40 Broker Awards program honors the top insurance brokers under the age of 40 across the United States.
At 38, Liz carries the title of president and is also the youngest member of the company’s Board of Directors. She oversees a division of more than 75 employee benefits professionals, while also focusing on initiatives that impact Assurance as a whole. She’s been instrumental in identifying, implementing and growing a variety of client service solutions, especially as it pertains to compliance and the ACA.
Since taking over the benefits practice in 2008, the team’s sales volume has increased 350 percent. In 2014 alone, Liz’s team generated $35 million in measurable value for clients, including $11 million in savings from potential taxes and fees brought on by the ACA.

A former All-American volleyball player and team captain at Northwestern University, Liz is hard to miss at 5’11”. However, it’s more than her height that makes her so visible in the industry. Liz serves on the both the Aetna National Advisory Board and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Producer Advisory Council. She’s also a member of the leadership team for the Council of Employee Benefits Executives (CEBE) which is a standing committee of the Council of Insurance Agents & Brokers (CIAB). In addition, Liz is an active member of the Union League of Chicago as well as the Northwestern University NClub and Northwestern University Volleyball Board.
In May 2015, Liz channeled her Wildcat roots and spoke for the Big Ten Network on how to be an effective leader, as well as her journey to becoming President at Assurance.
