Who: Assurance employees volunteered, funded and transformed a local child’s bedroom with Chicagoland Special Spaces. Special Spaces is a nonprofit that creates dream bedrooms for children with life-threatening illnesses. The organization hopes to create a space where the child can dream and imagine while recovering or healing.

What: Siya, a spunky young girl, received a bedroom makeover from Assurance volunteers. The volunteers turned her bedroom into a fantasy room only fit for a unicorn, such as herself. The unicorn themed room included everything from rainbow painted walls and bookshelves to twinkle lights and a new sky-high lofted bed. In addition to getting to know Siya, the volunteers said their favorite memory of the day was her reaction to her new dream bedroom.

The complete transformation entailed:

  • Painting two bedrooms
  • Assembling a loft bed for Siya
  • Building and painting bookshelves and a closet organizer
  • Creating colorful décor items from arts & crafts
  • Organizing her little sister’s room with some of Siya’s furniture

When: Friday, May 31, 2019

Where: Chicagoland

Assurance officially celebrated 10 room makeovers with Special Spaces! Special Spaces created a video compiling all of the transformations over the years.

Why: The volunteer opportunity is one of 21 similar events scheduled for 2019 where Assurance employees donate their time to deserving nonprofit organizations. All volunteer days are organized by the company’s employee-driven charitable foundation, Assurance Caring Together (ACT). Assurance employees have donated over 24,000 labor hours in the last 14 years through ACT.
