Schaumburg, Ill. (May 20, 2019) – Assurance is pleased to recognize YANMAR America as a Minimizing Risk, Maximizing Health (MRMH) Award recipient. YANMAR America is a global company based in Osaka, Japan whose mission is a ‘sustainable future’. YANMAR America is a recognized leader in the design and manufacturing of advanced performance diesel engines, equipment and gas-based energy systems.  Assurance recognized YANMAR America’s achievements at a MRMH Award presentation on Monday, May 6 at the client’s North American EVO Center in Acworth, GA.

The MRMH Award is open to all Assurance clients that work alongside the Top 50 U.S. insurance brokerage to achieve quantifiable results in minimizing workplace risk and maximizing the health and wellbeing of employees. Clients must meet certain criteria to qualify, including a large quantifiable reduction or improvement in a variety of key areas.

YANMAR America wanted to contain rising U.S. healthcare costs, reduce overall claim costs and create a sustainable culture of wellness for their employees. The manufacturer worked directly with Assurance on a five-year strategy. The strategy encompassed employee engagement, wellness and Health Savings Account (HSA) enrollment initiatives. The end goal was to help employees understand their current health and how to proactively minimize the risk for chronic conditions.

To hit their goal, YANMAR America provided consistent wellness communications, partnered with local hospitals to provide onsite biometric screenings, and brought in health coaches to review results and formulate custom plans of action. This enhancement tripled biometric screening participation to 79 percent in two years’ time with an overall increase of 163 percent.

YANMAR America’s HR team introduced wellness fairs that incorporated a mobile mammography station and vendors to discuss cholesterol and heart health with employees. The company also developed a points-based wellness platform that streamlined wellness initiatives and provided additional tools and resources to assist employees in meeting their personal health goals.

By 2018, YANMAR America fully embraced consumerism with its medical coverage by dropping the PPO plan and making HSAs the sole option for employees. Increasing participation in an HSA plan saves money for both employees and the employer. The lower premiums prevent employees from paying for coverage they rarely use, as is often the case with PPOs. Higher deductible limits and a focus on wellness and prevention also help employees become more engaged healthcare consumers.

Over a five-year period, YANMAR America managed to keep employee contributions for the HSA plan neutral. From 2017-2018, they saw positive risk migration with a 2 percent reduction in the pre-diabetic population and 5 percent reduction in total cholesterol. In addition, YANMAR America also reduced per employee per month claim costs resulting in $2.4 million in overall cost savings.

“Our employees are the real success story as we look back on our five-year healthcare journey. They’re the ones doing the right thing, and now they always make a point to incorporate wellness into their life,” said Tim Fernandez, president, YANMAR America.
